Stop leaving out the valuable breadcrumb trail

I am seeing more and more sites that are coming online everyday leaving out the all so valuable breadcrumb trails. This is a must when you are performing SEO and leaving this out could effect your rankings quite seriously.

Basically a breadcrumb is a navigational link abit like a site map but should be implemented as a trail to where that page is located in a site – for example if I went onto a site to buy bicycles and I went to page 4 I would expect to see a breadcrumb trail as follows – Bicycles Home > Bicyle Types > 3 wheel Bikes> Yamaha.

As you notice it all links back to the homepage thus giving the homepage the authority status so I recommend chucking in a targetted main keyword there.

Breadcrumbs are a very important factor to all SEO efforts these days and should not be left out. The reason I am blogging about this is because I see so many so called SEO Gurus not implementing this nor using the benefit of anchor texts correctly on there site. For example using “Read More”, why not ellaborate on this? why not show the users and the search engines what you want them to read more about targetting your main keywords “Read more information on bicycles and motorbikes”, quick and prompt your telling them what information there will be if they click that link.

Please all fellow SEOs dont forget onpage optimization is still vital in obtaining good quality rankings

There’s nothing really to add, this is a great article. I know about the breadcrumb trail and try to implement it in all of new websites I develop. Pretty difficult to enchance the old ones though.
The main point here is navigation. Not so sure about search engines though.

  • http://www.malcolmcoles.co.uk/blog/breadcrumb-trails-in-wordpress/ Adding breadcrumb trails in wordpress

Part of the problem in wordpress is making the breadcrumb work – there’s no simple way to do it. I’ve ended up hacking the core files. There are some plugins which are simpler for the end user. But all in all, it’s not an easy thing to pull off – and made worse if you add posts to more than one category etc. It’s important to think through your categories and set hard and fast rules about what goes where if you’re going to use a breadcrumb trail.

Is there a WordPress plugin, which automatically creates a breadcrumb for all the pages on your blog.

    Nice info.

I will have to implement these into my current design. Is there a plugin that will do that for WordPress that actually works? I have been having issues with some that crash the theme when activated.

I had no idea breadcrumbs were important in SEO. I guess it makes sense, but I always thought they were just to help the user navigate.
