At the moment it might seem that FaceBook and Twitter are untouchable. After all, FaceBook just announced that it is about to reach half a billion users – how can anyone compete with that? The fact is that when others have tried to compete with these two social media power-giants recently they have lost – even Google can’t seem to be able to do it despite their continued attempts. MySpace has failed miserably at keeping up with the big two and seems to be losing users almost as fast as FaceBook is gaining them. There is a lot of excitement about a new social media site called Tumblr though, and this just might be a serious contender.
Tumblr already has about 7 million users and apparently 25,000 new people are signing up every day. These are impressive figures, but very modest when you compare it to FaceBook and Twitter. On the other hand though, there does seem to be a bit of momentum behind this website. There are also a growing number of people who are becoming dissatisfied with the big two, and are just looking for an excuse to jump ship. If Tumblr can convince these people that they have something new to offer then maybe it really can hit the big time in social media. In many ways Tumblr does seem to be offering what the other two are also providing, but it has to be said that it does this in a very unique way.
I would love to see a new social media site enter the fray; even my granny uses FaceBook and this just takes some of the excitement out of the whole thing. A new frontier in the social media world could certainly help make life interesting again.
