Google has releases two Application Programming Interfaces for geo-location. One of them is based on AJAX and the other on the Gears browser extension. This is mainly intended at helping web developers and mobile developers to distribute the content to authenticate the users based on their location.
The AJAX system is based on finding out the location of users based on IP address. This can be used with the help of the API key by the developers. You will get latitude, longitude and complete details about the user. This will help Google to provide a content that is based on the location, particularly in case of news to users. But this is not considered to be perfect. The look up can fail at times.
The Gears can do much more than just simply returning the location details of the users. Position changes can be tracked with time. The details on the location information of the users are not stored by Google. Users can give them the permission to determine this information. This setting can be changed later using Gears geolocation. Since both of these APIs have different functionalities, both are expected to bring some benefits to the appreciators of Google.
