Since the new Digg was launched a couple of weeks ago there has been nothing but headaches for Kevin Rose – the main man responsible for this website. Not only have many loyal fans deserted ship out of protest, but many have done their best to cause problems by providing a gush of criticism and encouraging others to abandon ship as well. To make matters a lot worse, Digg is suffering from one technical problem after another; so much so that the website is now down more than it is up – Digg has responded by firing people. There is no doubt that this website has suffered a lot of damage and it is anybody’s guess if it will ever be able to rebound.
Diggnation is the popular video podcast hosted by Kevin Rose where he talks about the most popular stories on Digg. Of course at the moment the main thing people are talking about is how much of a mess Digg has gotten itself into. Rose talked about this on the show and seems to be blaming everything on the technical hiccups. He does see this as a temporary problem and generally seems to think that it will be business as usual soon – others are nowhere near as confident.
Change has to happen and Digg could not stay the way it was forever but there is no doubt that this recent escapade has been a complete disaster. I doubt if Rose could have planned for it to go more spectacularly wrong. If there is any chance of this site surviving it is going to have to do something and do something quick; the web does not wait for people to get their act together – there are just too many websites eagerly waiting to take Digg’s place.
