Link Building Tips

As we all know link building is the major and has been the major hot topic in the SEO world for years.

Lets go back to the beginning before the existence of the artificial intelligent search engines, with very smart and clever algothirms. The old days were great the only way to really get your site noticed was word of mouth – posting your link in forums and other discussion so that people would actually be interested and click on your site. Nowadays the links are still there but are perceived in such a different way now we need to obtain them links not to be clicked on but to be picked up by the search engines spiders. Here we have a look at ways to obtaining these:

Natural Links

Natural links are the best way possible to obtain rankings but are very hard the key is to keep writing unique relevant content and eventually people will start linking back to you. Another half natural way is to submit your sites to top directories this will cause a bounce on effect as most small directories extract content and listings from the larger ones giving you quality one-way links.

Paid Links

Paid links is very much disapproved by most major search engines due to the fact that links are meant to be given to you in a natural way by webmasters because they enjoy your content or what you have to offer. Purchasing links does some what the opposite as it is like paying your way up the SERPs. In the end we all know that gaining links naturally is a very hard task these days as there are billions of web pages, so the best advice fo buying links is find sites that do not tell the whole world they are selling links as the search engines will find out and penalize every site that is involved.

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal Links have also been somewhat devalued by the search engines lately especially with google due to the same reasons as above, we still think reciprocal links do still have slight value so try and get links that are the same theme as your site and related to the users – and again try to just obtain these via one on one discussions with the webmaster in question.

Three way links

We feel that three way links are a much better alternative than reciprocal linking as there is more weight on these sort of links due to the fact that the site that links back to you, you do not have to link back to them. e.g If we link to www.wordpress.org and they link back to us from a totally different site they have.

Article Links

Article links are a very good way to obtain natural backlinks especially with the rise of social media sites. The way to do this is write a great article or a news flash on your niche. Submit them to sites such as Digg or Propeller and once popular they will bring you in a ton of natural backlinks which the search engine will love.

So whatever ways you decide to do remember stick to the search engines guidelines, as you can never trick them.

I personally find paid links are too risky! I would be so careful if I were to buy links because if you got caught it is game over!!

Thanks for the concise advice. It seems there is a lot of conflicting information about paid links. Some marketers I know swear by it. I imagine it is pretty hard for the search engines to determine if a link was paid for or not, so it like a smart method if done correctly. Also I’m too familiar with three-way linking, so I’ll have to look into that more.

Great post! by the way – make sure you have a beautiful, streamlined site or you will never persuade anyone to link up to you. Be prepared to keep plugging away at this process, as long as it takes, until you achieve link popularity stardom! Thanks

    Nice Article.
Link Building is very time consuming and takes lots of effort but it’s worth it at the end.
I been always liked the saying “Content is King and Linking is Queen”.
Speaking of Contents, if you write high quality and original articles it will attract backlinks naturally.

Natural Links – top banana, but it usually requires money to submit to top directories except DMOZ, which is really impossible in my experience to get into.

Paid Links – I disapprove, but someone may try if they need a quick jump. Not with Google though because of the sandbox.

Reciprocal Links – may help, there’s nothing wrong with them but usually offer little value.

Three way links – difficult to organise unless one has a lot of websites under his or her control. But they are of very good value!

Article Links – they are the best. It’s only necessary to write a lot of new highly interesting and useful articles :-) .

Many people fail to realize that the link must be relevant.

Nice summary of the various link building strategies. 2 other integral and highly effective link building campaigns are Social Bookmarking and Blogging. They are very effective traffic generators, and also incoming links from many of the social sites are deemed by the search engines to be high authority. Directory submission is also a valid stratey, but typically, you do not get any deep links and occasionally you are not able to target with anchor text. I’m not too sure about the Paid Links, my believe is that it is regarded by search engines, e.g the Yahoo paid directory transfers credibility, though that’s not a cheap option. Also, whether for SEO or not, paid banner links are often a valid and integral part of an overall marketing plan.

Some top tips around linking strategies here. Natural linking although extremely hard work is really the only way to bring in those customers. The trouble is, and why people tend to look at the other avaneues, is that natural linking takes time. I liken it to a succesful songwriter – write a unique catchy timeless song and it will repay you for many years with millions of people listening to it. Same applies to SEO write great quality unique content over time will be linked to in big numbers thus rewarding you with link juice = website hits!

I have had very good success with articles lately. Of course you need to match up your links with the appropriate content.

  • http://seosoftwarefree.blogspot.com irvan

I agree with you sometimes build natural links is very difficult

  • http://www.syedtaha.com Anonymous

I think the easiest way to get a lot of natural links is by writing some viral, unique and useful content
For example, if you write a list of web directories, social bookmarking sites, do follow blogs etc on an seo blog/website, you sure can bet that you will get a lot of natural backlinks.
Because, this is the kind of information webmasters are looking for and will also pass on when they find it useful. :)

Off page optimization mostly comprises 90% of a successful marketing website startup So you should learn how to properly promote and market it using the tips above.

I believe that article writing is the best way to obtain one way links to your website however you have to submit different contents or somewhat put a “spin” to your article. For fast index, social bookmarking submissions is the way to go….

    just my 2 cents.

  • http://www.insurance4all.co.uk Anna

I have found that articles have been a good way of driving traffic to my site just as you have suggested. Just as an afterthought I have also found that my wordpress blog gets indexed super speedy fast, within 10 minutes compared to my insurance site which has pages that are still not indexed after several months.
