An issue rocked the blogosphere when music bloggers saw their past posts disappearing in their Blogger blogs since November. Ryan Spaulding, the author of a Boston music blog – Ryan’s Smashing Life, relayed his story to LA Weekly just this February 4, 2009 about his music posts, both new and old, being deleted from his blog without his consent.
It seems that the music blogs are facing an issue of copyright in music companies as they asked Google to delete posts from their hosted blogs. According to Spaulding, after deleting his posts, Google even stated this as a reason to delete his posts. Spaulding was confused because the same labels have given him a press release to promote their labels. However, as he tried to defend himself, he is simply ignored by Google.
Ryan Spaulding was left in the middle as he is used by the music companies to promote their labels and his post gets deleted because of Google. Truly, Google had a lot to answer in this issue. The reason cannot be justified because there are still blogs out in the blogosphere promoting the same labels. The only difference is they are not hosted on Blogger.
The issue here is that Google should give their users the chance to defend themselves. Bloggers like Ryan Spaulding is left against the wall when they deleted his posts without his consent. He cannot reply back. He is not even warned. He is just surprised to see his posts disappearing.
This now leaves the question on whether the Blogger platform is still suitable for music blogs. With Google’s unfair implementation of rules, maybe it is better for music bloggers to find new homes. Even though Blogger is free does not mean they can do this to their users.
