The power of social media was once again demonstrated this week by the story of a Nottinghamshire woman who managed to win back her boyfriend by using YouTube. When her partner split with her, Kelly Summers didn’t just fall apart; instead she fell apart and began creating videos for YouTube in the form of diary. Kelly shared her broken heart with thousands of other people who watched her videos and eventually her actions convinced the estranged boyfriend to have a change of heart.
About 11,000 people got to see 53 year old Kelly emotionally fall apart and her misery was spread out over 62 movies. For many of these video diary entries Kelly shows signs that she has let go of her personal appearance and probably a lot of her reason as well. By the end of this series of videos though, Kelly seems to be turning a corner; with the help of some self-help books. Just when it looks like she might just get over him he once again appears in her life. The sight of her falling apart though made her boyfriend Keith Tallis feel very guilty; there was no doubting his desertion caused a huge impact on his ex’s life.
It is likely that Kelly’s success will try to be replicated by other people. There are a lot of broken hearted people in the world so hopefully this won’t turn YouTube into some type of heartbreak hotel. This type of online confessional might work occasionally, but it could also be something that many of us would look back at years from now and feel embarrassed about. Maybe having your heartbreak documented and saved for prosperity could have a downside – it might not be the kind of thing that you would want potential employers turning up when considering you for a job.
