Signs That Twitter May Be Struggling to Cope With its Popularity

Twitter users again suffered periods of time this week when they were faced with the smiling white whale; the symbol that Twitter is suffering problems. It now seems that these failures with the service are happening a lot more frequently. During the World Cup they seemed occurring all the time, and it took away from a lot of the enjoyment that people were getting while twittering about the matches. It really does seem that as Twitter grows in popularity it is struggling to keep up.

Nobody could have predicted just how successful Twitter would become. To be honest, when I first heard about it I thought it was a joke. Why would anyone want to waste time on messages that were only a 140 characters long? It seemed even more limited than texting. I was proved wrong though, and even though I occasionally get annoyed with the site, I have to admit that it has its charms. Twitter has also proved invaluable when it comes to keeping up with world events – in fact it has changed the world I’m sure that even the creators of the site never envisioned.

The continued down time of Twitter is a bit worrying and you have to wonder about what will happen if its current growth continues – which it seems almost certain to do. Will the white whale just appear one day and stay there forever. Many people got a shock a few months back when all their followers disappeared for a few hours; how will they cope if this happens for real. It is understandable that Twitter have been caught a bit off-guard by the success of the web-site but hopefully they will find away to accommodate its increasing popularity and turn the white whale into and endangered species.
