I love the iPlayer; in fact I hardly ever watch television these days but instead watch my favourite shows online. I think a lot of people do this. To be honest with you, every time I have switched the television on recently there has been nothing worth seeing on there; despite the fact that we have about two hundred channels! The BBC realises the fact that more of us are watching online and they have also witnessed the growing influence of social media; naturally enough they have decided to combine the two.
One way that the iPlayer plans to incorporate social media is by allowing viewers to chat while watching online; something similar already occurs with Justin TV. The BBC plans to team up with Microsoft so that Windows Live Messenger users can chat while watching. Even more excitingly there are plans to integrate the iPlayer with FaceBook and other social media sites. This is all great news and is sure to encourage even more people to take advantage of the iPlayer.
The ability to watch shows legally online is something to be applauded; and fair play to the BBC for making this a reality. In the UK there is now a fairly respectable selection to choose from when it comes to free online TV; as well as the iPlayer there is also the ITV player, Four on Demand, and others. The BBC is taking this one step forward and introducing social media. Anyone who has ever used Justin TV will realise how fun it is to chat while watching these shows; even the most boring programmes can be fun when you get to slag them off as you watch. I feel convinced that the BBC will be rewarded for this move as the amount of time we spend on the site increases.
