The latest PR

Understanding Google’s PR system has been difficult for many webmasters. There’s times when everything you do including the hiring of SEO services and web development doesn’t seem to alter your site PR. In fact, the algorithms they use t calculate PR has come under a lot of scrutiny especially since everyone is working with the same intent, i.e., to improve PR.

The last quarter of 2008 saw many confused faces because there was a complete jumble in the PR system. The online world seemed chaotic because most sites didn’t have a PR for a few days. A lot of free blogs lost out on their well gained PR. The reason for this was a lot of free blog owners were engaging in link exchange and promotional ventures through content.

However, the New Year has been a good time for many site owners. The latest PR evaluations are out and many sites have improved their rankings. Of course, on the flip side many have lost their PR by a notch or two. One must realize that the PR does not increase or decrease overnight so until the next evaluation put in all you have in regards to content creation, website development and SEO, so you can see the positive outcome when the next evaluation is delivered.

I find it all a bit confusing and hard to work out just how they calculate it, really I suppose it doesn’t matter too much so long as there’s lots of good content and then the links build as a natural result

I have my website since one year and I been doing backlink buidling since August. My page rank was last updated at around the end of the year.I am pretty sure they are updated every three months. So if you are working hard to improve your page rank the update should be around 26-30th March!

i got pr 3 in my empty blog, while for the main blog i just have pr 2. do you know what’s wrong with this?

The other big issues is that PR and search engine rank are not totally connected. I have a PR 2 page that outranks a handful of PR 5 and 6 pages. The only sure thing about PR is that PR 0 can indicate a serious problem with a site. When one of my sites got banned by the Google, the first indication that I had a problem was the PR went to 0.

I generally lost PR on my sites… down 1 notch on most of my sites. It’s definitely a frustration. I think I’d prefer search no longer being monopolized, though I still use google about 500 time a day LOL

Far too much emphasis can be placed on PR. It should be viewed as an indication of the quantity and PR of inbound links only. It does not reflect the relevance (or otherwise) of those links in terms of content and theme of the sites being linked from to the site being linked to.

Very informative post and thanx for the great share, but i wonder how is PR calculated in accordance with the new algorithm, does anyone have any ideas?

  • skyhook

In my opinion, PR isn’t that much of an issue. If you have good content, and you getting decent traffic, then you should be fine and not worry about what your pr rating is.

I am doing some ‘experiment’ to get a PR for my blog. Just for fun. I follow the tips and guide I read/found on the internet. Hopefully by next year getting a pagerank for it. I am aiming to publish around 30 articles on it every month.

PR is crap. No one can accurately predict what it’s about to do anyways. It’s like counting on the BCS to do the right thing or trying to win the lottery–you’ve got to hedge every single bet just in case.

Pagerank may be calculated continuously, but there most definitely are parts in the algorithms/spam detection/adsense quality assesment of a site/etc. that use the data which is represented by the toolbar.

It’s hard to really understand how the Google PR works and even harder to improve it. I got a fast PR 3 after I launched my portfolio but now it has a pr 1 and same backlinks.
